Africans In London TV Brings Africa And The Caribbean To The UK With IPTV Channel

17 April 2009 (Brighton, UK): Africans In London TV (AILTV) launches on the Global Digital Broadcast (GDBTV) IPTV platform. Initially founded in 2006 as a trial internet channel by musician, producer and recording engineer, Joseph ‘J.J’ Otieno Adamson (‘Survivors of Genocide’ – AIL Films; ‘A Goat’s Tail’ – Amedume Films; ‘Lost Civilisation’ – Windfall Films; ‘Cheetah’ – Walt Disney), the concept proved to be so popular that J.J decided to develop it into a full television channel which would spotlight the skills and talents of people with African heritage and forge connections between all people of African descent.

J.J explains: “It all started with an idea I had in 2000 and that was to create a simple TV programme, ‘Post Card From London’, which would tell stories about how Africans and people of African heritage go about their business in London. The objective was to create awareness and, being broadcast over the internet, the programme could also help educate people back in Africa.”

J.J’s completed a B.A. (Honours) in Audio Technology at Thames Valley University in 2005 and then went on to work with a number of African TV channels, including Faith TV, Passion TV and Revelation TV, before meeting with GDBTV at the 2007 Broadcast LIVE and VideoForum show (now Broadcast Video Expo) in London and being inspired to set up his own IPTV channel.

J.J. continues: “GDBTV’s technology and the global possibilities of IPTV have allowed me to not only bring my original ideas to full fruition, but to take them further than I thought was possible. The result, in AILTV, makes all my hard work and persistence worthwhile.”

All programmes on AILTV are either made by people of African heritage; about people of African heritage; or reflect the interests and culture of people with African heritage. Content includes fashion and beauty; music and entertainment; business and current affairs; cultural and community features; films; and documentaries.

This specialisation has drawn the attention of one of the UK’s leading, independent, visual branding and marketing agencies, Brand Design Agency (BDA). The long-standing and London based agency, which is also jointly recognised for its work in the fashion and beauty industry, will be working closely with AILTV in order to develop AILTV branding and help take AILTV’s commercial projects to market.

Sophie White, CEO of BDA, comments: “Brand Design Agency is proud to be in partnership with AILTV. Our prospective companies have joined forces to deliver fresh ideas and concepts to businesses and communities through branding and television programmes. I believe we can help AILTV bring African communities together, in one place, in order to market the AILTV name and products to a global audience.”

Corporate video creative studio, Devilishly Handsome Productions (DHP), is also keen to work with AILTV and has offered its support as AILTV develops its brand around the world.
Thembisa Cochrane, producer at DHP, says: “I’m so glad fate brought us together! AILTV sounds very exciting and promising and, the more I find out about IPTV, the more I am convinced it is the way people are going to be receiving content in the future.”

He continues: “We have been looking to move into the IPTV market as, working in the space between broadcast and internal corporate video, we see converging media as the future of the industry. AILTV could provide a perfect playground for us to explore content and delivery partnerships which would enable us to learn the market and adapt to the specific needs of IPTV production.”

Also attracting the attention of the press, AILTV has a four page article in the latest addition of leading broadcast technology industry magazine, TV-Bay (distributed at the Virgin departure gates for flights to Vegas for NAB); plus an interview with J.J being broadcast on the BBC World Service on Tuesday 21st April (also available on the BBC World Service website after the broadcast date).

J.J credits his Thames Valley University education for his ongoing success and his previous teacher, Andrew East, comments: “I am particularly proud of Joseph, as he is an excellent example of graduates from The London College of Music at Thames Valley University Technology courses. Joseph started his academic career at LCM on our Foundation Degree course, transferring to our B.A. course; and his success is a great testament to how our courses encourage and empower students to develop their skills as entrepreneurs.”

AILTV is available on the Something TV set-top box and virtual set-top box IPTV service in the UK, online on GDBTV’s Go portal and also via the AILTV website.

AILTV is committed to promoting young African film makers and showcasing all Africa-related, high quality work on the channel; and is also interested in kids’ and teenager TV programmes of African heritage, particularly in animation. AILTV welcomes submissions and communications from writers, producers, directors and artists – please contact J.J at josephadamson62@yahoo.com
