Global Digital Broadcast Forges the Way in IPTV with UK Rollout

12th December 2007: UK-based IPTV platform, Global Digital Broadcast (GDB), proves itself as a leading player in the international IPTV race by partnering with PlayTV UK in order to add the UK's first IP broadcast network to its wordwide portfolio.

To date, GDB maintains and operates IP networks in Northern Europe (brand: Canal Sur) and Mid-West America (brand: SuncasTV); has deals to host and handle the IPTV networks in Sweden and Scandinavia; plus aggregates Russian content for MaksTV (the largest Russian broadcast outside of Russia) and Latin American programming for US-based, Spanish-speaking Via America. This is in addition to having partners and IP set-top box re-sellers in over 30 countries around the world.

GDB co-founder and managing director, Mr. Jim Deans, says: "IPTV is not just industry speculation anymore; it is a reality and it is here now. PlayTV UK is our way of showing the UK market that IPTV is, undeniably, the new age of broadcast. If you want proof, then all you have to do is look at the stats and do the maths."

Recent international broadband statistics state that the broadband users have increased from 178 million (June 2006) to 221 million (June 2007)* and that 99.6% of the UK is capable of 2-10mg of broadband.** With specific reference to IPTV, analyst company Canalys indicate 39.6 million worldwide IPTV subscribers by the end of 2010; which is a tenfold increase from fewer than 4 million in 2006.***

The PlayTV UK consumer rollout begins on January 3rd 2008, at which time the electronic programme guide (EPG) will also be released. As from April 3rd 2008, the company will be installing approximately 25,000 per month, which will have over 400 channels of linear, live and video-on-demand programming.

GDB is exhibiting at: BroadcastLIVE and VideoForum show; stand K18; 30th January – 1st February 2008 (Earls Court 2, London, UK): and NATPE; stand 721; 29th – 31st January 2008 (Mandalay Bay Resort, Las Vegas, USA).
