IPTV Unlocks the Door to International Turkish Television
Eyup Togan has worked in a spectrum of positions throughout his career. As sports anchorman for TGRT television, he was involved in securing the exclusive television rights for the FA cup and pre-champions league matches. He has worked as a presenter and co-producer for Turkish Radio; monitored and broadcast international events from London to ATV television; and represented continental newspapers and satellite television stations. Being multi-lingual, he has also worked as a freelance translator and captioning expert in a diverse range of sectors, including law, broadcasting and for the European Captioning Institute (ECI), Thomson, Technicolour and the National Geographic channel.
Jim Deans, co-founder and managing director of GDB, says: “We believe that ‘local’ television should be available to anyone, anywhere in the world and regardless of their geographical location. There is a massive Turkish speaking population in the UK today and we feel that a man of Mr. Togan’s professional stature and expertise is ideal to head this sector of the market.”
Currently, in the UK, the Turkish speaking population can be divided into four categories; Turkish Cypriots estimate 125,000; Turkish speaking UK residents registered with the consulate number 110,000, with an approximate 140,000 overall; Kurdish-Turks are stand at approximately 50,000 and other Turkish speaking communities, such as Azeris, Turkomans, etc, are considered at 10,000. This puts the UK-based Turkish speaking community at 325,000.
Eyup Togan comments: “There is, without doubt, a huge market for Turkish content. Previously, we had to limit ourselves to niche media; but IPTV has opened up limitless opportunities for us to not only tap directly into that market, but to also offer a greatly in-demand service to the Turkish speaking communities, not only in the UK, but across the globe.”
Mr. Togan continues: "Turkish audiences are one of the most perceptive and rapidly adapting in the world. I have no doubt that IPTV will appeal extremely well to their expectations."
The new package will include popular Turkish channels (such as Kanal D, Star TV, ATV, SAMANYOLU, FOX TV, Kanal 7, Show TV, TV8, Skyturk and the TRT channels); news channels (including NTV, CNN Turk, Haberturk, Kanal E, CNBC and TGRT News); niche and thematic channels (counting Hilal TV, National Geographic, Roj TV, Kanal B, Kanal A, Mehtap TV, English and Turkish Eurosport, Powerturk music channel, Dreamturk and Number 1 TV); and Turkish-Kurdish radio channels, London Turkish Radio and Kurdish Radio Sound FM. Further channels and stations will be continuously added as the service progresses.
